Glossary

Ejector Pump Systems - In some older homes, rural homes or other homes that may not have the ability to connect to a municipal sewage system, an ejector sewage system is used to dispose of wastewater. Typically these are two pump systems to guard against overflow.

Freeze Prep - Freeze preparation is common for people who live in areas prone to freezing in the wintertime, but many people do not know how to adequately protect their pipes and plumbing. You can wrap blankets around your exposed exterior pipes for short-term protection against freezing. Leave your faucets dripping slowly when there is a hard freeze to minimize the chance of them freezing over.

Gas Line Leaks - Gas lines can carry propane or natural gas from either a propane storage tank or a natural gas facility. As long as the equipment is installed and maintained properly, gas lines are perfectly safe. Both propane and natural gas lines have smells added to them so leaks can be easily detected. If you detect a gas leak in your area, call a professional for assistance immediately.

Household Water Line Compliance - Household water lines are connected to the municipal water main. The water line is considered your property and you are responsible for ensuring it is compliant with the state plumbing codes. Since most people do not have the ability to run their own water line, it is common to hire a professional to connect it. The person you hire must have a plumber’s license in order to run your water line and connect it to the water main.

Hydro Jetting - Hydro jetting is a high-pressure drain cleaning method that clears difficult, blocked drains and pipes.

Pipe Bursts - Flooding due to a burst pipe or sewer backup is a serious problem and must be dealt with quickly. If the water heater is on, turn off the main water valve as quickly as possible. Call a professional to investigate the source of the problem after shutting off the water valve.

Pipe Burst Responsibility - The general rule of thumb is that you are responsible for problems that occur in the water and sewer lines on your property.

Reverse Osmosis Filtration - Reverse osmosis filtration is a method of filtering water down to nearly the molecular level. This is done by forcing the water through a highly advanced thin plastic membrane. The membrane will allow the smaller water molecules to slowly seep through pores, but the larger dissolved solid molecules will not pass through. Reverse osmosis can remove 99% of certain dissolved solids from water.

Sewer Line Cleaning - Cleaning a clogged sewer line is similar to cleaning a clogged drain at your home, just on a much bigger scale. It is an important starting point for all sewer maintenance. Typically, high-powered water jet, high-velocity vacuums and strong chemicals are used in the cleaning process. Most homeowners hire professionals to clean their sewer lines.

Sump Pumps - Water pumps are placed in an excavated hole in the basement or around the perimeter of a house. As the groundwater level rises, the hole fills up. The sump pump then activates and pumps the water through piping away from the house.

Tree Root Damage - Tree roots can expand and cause blockages, breaks and flooding in your underground water pipes. There are treatment options available from professional plumbers. Ask your chosen plumber for more details.

Video Sewer Inspection - Sewer maintenance companies can use cameras to inspect your sewer pipe, water mains, drain lines and water wells. The camera inspections are designed to detect breaks, defective pipes or any issues that could cause maintenance problems in the future. The camera systems can fit into drains as small as 1.5 inches in diameter.
