Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that provides financial support to men and women in the construction field who endured life-altering injuries. Each year the Foundation honors numerous recipients with a grant and this year the Joseph Groh Foundation was happy to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, originally from Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil suffered a massive stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and the experience left his left leg severely impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors were concerned that he would ultimately end up confined to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, resulting in financial strain on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. They became optimistic when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, an apparatus that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help people with Adil’s condition walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they would not be able to afford the device in addition to the extensive rehab that Adil would need so he could understand how to use it.

Thankfully, a specialist at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, because of the generous grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
