Most home owners catch a whiff of a foul-smelling bathroom or kitchen drain at some point. The good news is, odors caused by bacteria or debris buildup can be eliminated with one of these three DIY solutions.
Three Ways to Get Rid of Drain Odor
Considering the amount of debris that spirals down your drains, it’s no surprise that your sinks smell foul every so often. The good news is, most stinky sinks can be cleansed with just a few household products.
What Causes Drain Odor?
· Grease, debris and other “gunk”
· Mold and mildew from leaky pipes
· Sulfates in the water
· Sewer gas emitting from the pipes
· Bacteria buildup
· Main line blockages
Solution No. 1
What you will need: vinegar, baking soda, boiling water and a pot.
Start by pouring equal parts vinegar and baking soda into the drain. Allow it to fizz for about 10 minutes, then flush it with a small pot of boiling water. The fizzing, scalding mixture should remove loose debris.
Solution No. 2
What you will need: bleach, boiling water and a pot.
Plug the sink and let it fill with hot water. Once it’s full, pour a small amount of bleach into the water and allow it all to drain. The bleach should eliminate any bacteria-causing odor.
Solution No. 3
What you will need: boiling water, citrus rinds and a pot.
Pour portions of the boiling water down the odorous drain in increments. Afterward, grind the citrus rinds in the garbage disposal with the tap running. This method works for stenches caused by rotten food blockages.
